Why Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Matters

2 min read

A few minutes spent reviewing your Medicare prescription drug plan each year could save you money and ensure your medications remain covered. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment takes place October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, people with Medicare can join, switch, or drop a prescription drug plan, with any changes taking effect on January 1. Even if you're happy with your current plan, it's important to review your coverage annually. Medicare drug plans can change from year to year, including monthly premiums, deductibles, copays, pharmacy networks, and the list of covered medications. A plan that worked well this year may not be the best option next year.

Why Review Your Plan?

A yearly review can help you:

  • Save money on prescription medications.

  • Make sure your medications are still covered.

  • Find a plan with lower out-of-pocket costs.

  • Confirm your preferred pharmacy is still in network.

If you've started a new medication, changed dosages, or experienced changes in your health, now is the perfect time to compare your options. When comparing plans, look beyond the monthly premium. Consider deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the total cost of your prescriptions throughout the year.

Making a Difference in Our Community

During the 2026 Medicare Open Enrollment season, the Resource Center assisted hundreds of local Medicare beneficiaries by:

  • Mailing 818 Medicare "Pink Sheets" to help individuals prepare for Open Enrollment.

  • Conducted 359 Medicare counseling appointments.

  • Completing 297 Medicare plan OKs.

  • Helping Medicare beneficiaries save an estimated $1,197,808 in annual prescription drug cost savings by finding plans that better met their needs.

These numbers highlight the value of reviewing your Medicare coverage each year. Even a short appointment can result in significant savings and greater peace of mind.

The Bottom Line

Reviewing your Medicare Part D plan each year is one of the best ways to protect your health and your budget. Taking a little time during Open Enrollment can help ensure you have the prescription drug coverage that's right for you in the coming year.
