December 2025 - June 2026 | Funded by United Way of Yellowstone County
Yellowstone County seniors overwhelmingly want to remain where they are. Yet rising housing costs, accessibility needs, transportation barriers, and social isolation are creating mounting challenges. Over six months, Allies in Aging gathered input through surveys, focus groups, and interviews to understand what older adults need to live safely and independently.

263 Seniors Surveyed
210 Urban | 53 Rural
71% of urban seniors don't want to move
85% of rural seniors don't want to move
FIVE KEY FINDINGS
1. Housing Affordability Under Pressure
19% urban and 26% rural seniors spend 30%+ of income on housing. Cost is the #1 concern for rural respondents. Affordability was raised in all five focus groups.
2. Accessibility Threatens Independence
Stairs and mobility barriers are the top urban concern. Thirty-eight respondents need home modifications (grab bars, walk-in showers, wider doorways, etc.) to stay safely.
3. Everyday Support Services Missing
70% urban and 75% rural seniors receive no formal support. Top needs: lawn care, snow removal, groceries, transportation, and technology help.
4. Social Isolation Is Growing
26% urban and 30% rural identified social activities as a top need. The challenge is awareness and access, not just more programs.
5. Seniors Want One Place to Turn
Consistent desire for centralized navigation - one intake point, advocacy support, and simplified access to housing and aging services.
FIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION
1. Expand housing choices (affordable, shared, middle housing, shallow subsidy, etc.)
2. Create centralized navigation for housing and aging services
3. Invest in home accessibility modifications
4. Expand practical support (transportation, maintenance, groceries, tech, etc.)
5. Strengthen social connection through outreach, not just more programs
