Preventing Falls at Home: Simple Steps for Safer Living

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but the good news is that many falls are preventable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), simple home safety changes can significantly reduce the risk of falling and help older adults maintain independence and confidence.
As we age, changes in balance, vision, and strength can increase fall risks. Being proactive about fall prevention, especially in the home, can make a meaningful difference in staying safe and active.
Why Fall Prevention Matters
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among adults age 65 and older. Beyond physical injury, a fall can impact emotional well-being, reduce independence, and create fear of future falls.
Fortunately, many falls are caused by common household hazards that can be addressed with small, practical adjustments.
Common Fall Hazards in the Home
One of the most frequently identified fall risks in the home is loose or unsecured rugs. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) notes that throw rugs and area rugs can slip or bunch up, creating a tripping hazard—especially on hard floors.
Other common fall risks include:
Cluttered walkways
Poor lighting
Slippery floors
Stairs without handrails
A Simple Solution: Securing Rugs
Securing rugs is an easy and effective way to reduce fall risk. The CDC and NIA both recommend removing loose rugs or securing them with non-slip backing or rug tape to prevent shifting.
Rug tape helps keep rugs firmly in place, reducing the chance of slipping or tripping. It’s a low-cost, low-effort solution that can have a big impact on home safety.
