July is Social Wellness Month, a time to focus on the importance of friendships, family, and staying connected with others. Spending time with people we care about can help us feel happier, healthier, and less stressed. Good relationships are important at every age and can improve both mental and physical health. Social wellness means building healthy and positive relationships with others. This can include family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or people in the community. Even simple activities like talking with a friend, attending a community event, or sharing a meal with someone can help people feel connected and supported.

One special day during Social Wellness Month is Cheer Up the Lonely Day on July 11th. This day reminds us to think about people who may feel lonely or isolated. Loneliness can affect anyone, including older adults, caregivers, students, or people who live alone. Feeling lonely for long periods of time can affect a person’s emotional and physical health. The good news is that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. A phone call, text message, card, or short visit can help someone feel remembered and cared for. Asking a neighbor how they are doing or inviting someone to lunch may brighten their entire day. Communities become stronger when people look out for one another.

Another important day in July is World Friendship Day on July 30th. This day celebrates the value of friendship and encourages people to appreciate the friends in their lives. Friends give us support, laughter, encouragement, and companionship. They help us through difficult times and celebrate happy moments with us. World Friendship Day is a great time to reconnect with old friends or thank someone who has made a positive difference in your life. Friendships do not have to be perfect to be meaningful. Being kind, listening, and spending time together are some of the best ways to build strong friendships.

Social Wellness Month is also a reminder to become more involved in our communities. Joining a club, volunteering, attending local events, or participating in group activities are good ways to meet people and stay socially active. Staying connected with others can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. As we celebrate this month together, we are reminded that kindness and connection matter. A simple conversation or act of friendship can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. This July, take time to reach out to others, strengthen your friendships, and help someone feel less alone. Small acts of kindness can make our families, friendships, and communities stronger.
