With the new year comes the continual demands of caregiving and the toll it can take on the person providing the care for a loved one. At a time of fresh resolutions, prioritize changes that improve upon your overall well-being and inspire much needed self-renewal. This new year, make some intentional changes such as:
Set aside personal time each day just for you. Even a few minutes every day that allows you to do something you enjoy, that energizes you, like taking a walk, simple quiet time, listening to music, reading a book, whatever gives you a sense of peace, do it for yourself.
Breathing exercises have been shown to improve a person’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Slow intentional deep breaths help to calm the mind and release tension. Try making it a habit while standing in line at the grocery store, waiting for a red light to change, or on hold while on the phone. It is easy to do and doesn’t take any time away from your day.
Eat regular, balanced meals. Often, we get in the habit of grabbing those quick to make processed foods or fast foods while on the run. Make it a point at least a few times a week to make time to enjoy a healthy, balanced meal. Try a new recipe or order a special full meal.
Connect with others who understand your caregiver journey. Building a network to find suggestions and hints can teach some invaluable ways to prevent burning out. Ultimately, surround yourself with individuals who support you.
Remember, it is okay to prioritize these simple changes.
